“We imagine ourselves to be whole, to be complete, to have a full identity and certainly not to be open or fragmented; we imagine ourselves to the author, rather than the object, of the narratives that constitute our lives. It is this imaginary closure that permits us to act. Still, it would suggest, we are now beginning to learn to act in the subjunctive mode, ‘as if we had’ a full identity, while recognizing that such a fullness is a fiction, an inevitable failure. It is this recognition that permits us to acknowledge the limits of our selves, and with it the possibility of dialoguing across the subsequent differences—the boundary, or horizon, from which, as Heidegger points out, things unfold: both towards us and away from us” p 25-26.
“a self that cannot abide its own non-mastery of the world fears and hates the other for concretizing its own specificity and fears and limits, and seeks to reduce otherness at every opportunity to a form of sameness and identity modeled on itself” p. 30 “In the oscillations of language and identities grow the seeds of doubt”
